Description

AP has been retained in search of a CFO for a local, growing, financially stable, non-profit. The organization works with people with disabilities to support them and their families. The CFO, in collaboration with the CEO, will be “hands-on” and drive the strategy. Ideal candidates will have prior non-profit leadership experience, along with a CPA and excellent communication and presentation skills. Responsibilities

  • Lead the Finance Department, overseeing all financial operations and ensuring alignment with agency goals.
  • Evaluate and improve internal accounting controls; ensure compliance with federal, state, and agency regulations.
  • Stay current on relevant financial laws, codes, and policies at both federal and New York State levels.
  • Oversee financial audits; implement corrective actions and policy improvements as needed.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly financial statements and year-end audit documentation.
  • Manage agency cash flow, forecasting both short- and long-term financial requirements.
  • Prepare and present the agency’s annual fiscal budget; provide strategic financial recommendations to the President/CEO.
  • Advise on investment strategies for excess cash and support long-term financial planning.
  • Build and maintain relationships with funding source representatives and ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Develop, update, and enforce Finance Department policies and procedures.
  • Hire, train, and supervise Finance Department staff; provide ongoing coaching, support, and performance evaluations.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, and Corporate Compliance Committee.
  • Lead financial planning efforts, including forecasting, scenario analysis, and strategic modeling.
  • Provide high-quality financial analysis and reporting to support strategic initiatives and business development.
  • Track, analyze, and report key financial and operational metrics.
  • Collaborate with the President/CEO on operational and strategic issues, offering insight on financial planning and analysis.
  • Participate in external peer networks to share knowledge and stay informed on industry best practices.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting required.
  • CPA preferred.

Experience

  • At least eight years of experience in business operations and analysis in an organization with multiple contracts, grants, and services.
  • At least five years of accounting experience in the non-profit sector.
  • At least five years of experience in staff supervision and team leadership.
  • At least five years of experience presenting financial data to senior leadership, boards, stakeholders, or external partners.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Advanced skills in Excel, PowerPoint, and database management.
  • Skilled in data analytics and financial modeling techniques.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex financial concepts clearly to non-financial staff, board members, and external stakeholders.
  • Experienced in fostering cross-functional collaboration and building effective working relationships to support decision-making and consensus.
  • Strong analytical thinker with the ability to translate strategic vision into actionable operational plans.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills and strong attention to detail.
