Calling Strong Hands-On Controllers seeking a new home!  We have a small yet mighty construction company (GC) on the east side of Rochester that has an opening for its controller.  This position is involved in many facets of the businessand will be working directly with the owners and many of the company's near 40 employees.  Responsibilities include the financial and human resources functions.  Think cashflow, WIP analysis, contract compliance, financial reporting. hiring, and benefits administration.  This company is in a strong cash positionand has a friendly office environment.  Thie ideal candidate is someone who is detail-oriented, self-motivated, organized, and enjoys wearing many hats.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises accountant's work- a/p, payroll, general office administration.  Approves payments and payrolls prior to disbursement.
  • Oversees payments to subcontractos- including collection of all required documentation.
  • Preparation of WIP Schedule and provides supporting analysis.
  • Revenue management (billing; aging receivables) including collection calls.
  • Compliance with State and Federal regulations across the business including OSHA recording keeping, prevailing wage compliance, postings and documentation, tax compliance, and others.
  • Human resources activities, including working with third-party benefits administrator, hiring and on-borading employees, managing time off policies, and other needs as they arise.
  • Coordination of quarterly GL closings and preparation of financial statements.
  • Prepare various general ledger and bank account reconciliations and provides analysis and reports as needed.
  • Provide guidance to staff on new accounting principles or procedures.
  • Interact with external auditors, advisors, and other third parties.
  • Creation and enforcement of internal controls.
  • Facilitate IT management and improvements.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/accounting concentration required.
  • CPA / CMA and or MBA will be given priority consideration .

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction accounting and preparation of financial statements, including working knowledge of job costing/cost accounting – OR - Minimum 4-5 years Public Accounting experience working with construction clients.
  • Prior experience handling the human resources functions for a business is also desired.
  • Experience in construction and project cost management.
  • Experience/knowledge of SAGE construction accounting software is a plus.

  • Understanding of the typical environment of a small business where responsibilities will include other random functions and an all-hands-on-deck mentality when necessary.
  • Must be detail-oriented, have strong analytical skills, work accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to meet deadlines for time-sensitive projects.
  • Basic understanding of tax regulations regarding business deductions, including depreciation and amortization.
