AP Professionals is partnering with a local manufacturer in search of an Electrical Controls Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for the complete lifecycle management of the electrical controls hardware for a machine tool family. Your main tasks will include designing, developing, maintaining, documenting, and troubleshooting electrical controls hardware specifically tailored for gear manufacturing machines.


  • Design, develop, maintain, document, and troubleshoot gear manufacturing machines.
  • Collaborate with other Engineering groups (Fluid Power, Mechanical, Software, and Applications Engineering) to implement a Systems Engineering approach in machine design.
  • Engage with Proposals and Sales to comprehend Customer Specifications and relevant Safety Standards for developing machine cost and schedule estimates.
  • Utilize EPLAN for creating system schematics and BOMs.
  • Interpret Mechanical Designs using Creo View.
  • Maintain schematic masters and master BOMs for both current and legacy machines.
  • Create customized designs for electrical controls, considering functional requirements, customer specifications, and proper component selection.
  • Manage updates and changes based on customer/supplier interactions through Engineering Change Orders.
  • Collaborate with Assembly Methods to apply appropriate part coding and documentation for efficient machine assembly.
  • Participate in Process Improvement initiatives to identify deficiencies in Electrical Controls Hardware and develop systematic solutions.
  • Follow, enhance, and create Work Instructions documenting Electrical Controls Hardware Engineering processes.


  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering.


  • 5 years of experience, including internships/co-ops.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

CAD Skills:

  • Develop and manage schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Create symbols, utilize symbol libraries, download manufactured items, and use relations within Eplan for stock list development.
  • Proficient in both NFPA and IEC styles for controls schematic interpretation and creation.

Business Systems Skills:

  • Create and maintain BOMs and material masters for components.
  • Manage BOMs for Engineer to Order (ETO) projects and customer specials.
  • Review machine BOM and assess parts availability.
  • Familiarity with SAP or a similar data management system for business.

Design Skills:

  • Select and configure components, collaborating with suppliers such as Fanuc and Siemens.
  • Develop 2D panel layouts and conduct spatial studies. Standardize configurations for optimized performance and reduced cost.
  • Facilitate Design Review, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA), and cross-functional design meetings, including coordination, recording/publishing meeting minutes, formalizing documents, and driving completion of action items.
  • Attend Technical Review Meetings and configure machines considering lead time and production requirements.
  • Provide Engineering hours and material cost estimates for quotations, as well as costs for additional testing and installation.
