Description

AP Professionals has partnered with an established manufacturing company in search of a Sr. Magnetics Design Engineer. As a Senior Magnetics Design Engineer, you will design electrical systems and mechanical configurations for custom magnetic components, including transformers and inductors. Your role will involve supporting the design of tooling, fixtures, BOMs, and process instructions. You will apply your expertise to enhance the company's competitive edge in quotations, new product development, production, and technology validation.

This role can be in the Victor, NY area or Orlando, FL area.

Responsibilities

  • Translate customer requirements for magnetic components into clear success criteria and technical specifications for both products and processes.
  • Utilize computer-aided modeling and simulation techniques—such as finite element analysis—to perform design trade-off evaluations.
  • Collaborate effectively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to support the development of new products.
  • Evaluate experimental results from prototype and model testing to identify improvements and suggest cost-saving strategies.
  • Stay informed on advancements in power electronics and magnetics design tools, advising leadership on potential opportunities and risks.
  • Join daily team meetings to review project progress and work collaboratively to resolve challenges.
  • Create milestone plans and establish deadlines to ensure timely project completion, while maintaining accountability and providing progress updates.
  • Develop initial magnetics design concepts for quotes and prototypes, including manufacturing processes that involve custom tooling and specialized machinery, in coordination with suppliers to ensure cost-effective solutions.
  • Recommend process improvements during production to reduce labor time, improve safety, and enhance consistency.
  • Design control plans and test circuits for new magnetic products, including custom electrical testing using sinusoidal, resonant, and non-sinusoidal waveforms to assess dissipation, partial discharge, and other critical parameters.
  • Contribute to problem-solving efforts using tools like DFMEA, PFMEA, HALT, and PPAP (including MSA and PCP for target facilities).
  • Support assigned projects from prototype through First Article to full production, overseeing design reviews and managing product lifecycle changes. Collaborate with the Design Center Tiger Team to improve manufacturing processes and resolve production challenges.
  • Provide technical support to company manufacturing facilities, resolving issues related to materials, production methods, and inspections.
  • Participate in weekly training sessions focused on configuration control, drawing standards, supplier management, and related engineering processes.
  • Perform additional tasks as needed to support the company’s goals and initiatives.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Experience

  • 5–10 years of experience designing custom passive magnetic components for high-performance power electronics applications, with a proven track record of successful outcomes.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Strong interest in ongoing professional growth in magnetics design techniques, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Skilled in using Ansys, Comsol, SolidWorks, and electrical circuit simulation software such as PSPICE and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with global teams and suppliers.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously while optimizing time and resources.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled information.
