AP Professionals has been retained in search of a Director of Finance for a well-known nonprofit, local organization. This is the top finance executive in the company. The Director of Finance is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the financial health of the organization. Reporting to senior leadership, this role oversees all financial operations, including the creation and management of financial reports, monitoring of investment activities, ensuring financial and regulatory compliance, and developing financial and operational strategies. Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the accounting/finance team, ensuring the accuracy of financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements, receivables, payables, payroll, general ledger, audits, benefits, and budgets.
  • Ensure timely preparation of financial statements and performance reports.
  • Oversee accounting systems in a GAAP-compliant environment.
  • Manage organizational cash flow to support operations.
  • Supervise finance staff as needed across departments or affiliated entities.
  • Collaborate with department leaders, executive leadership, and other stakeholders. Provide financial insights and serve as a trusted advisor to leadership teams, committees, and organizational initiatives.
  • Lead the development of annual and long-range budgets, including establishing key budget assumptions in collaboration with stakeholders. Present budgets to leadership and finance committees.
  • Partner with external auditors to support annual audit processes.
  • Assist with preparation of tax returns.
  • Oversee real estate, fixed assets, depreciation, and related tax exemption filings.
  • Manage organizational assets including investments, property, and fleet management.
  • Stay current with financial, non-profit, and industry trends that impact financial management.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.
  • Oversee finance-related committees in collaboration with committee chairs.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state financial reporting requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in finance or accounting.
  • Preferred: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.

Experience

  • Ten (10) years of progressive experience in finance or accounting, with at least five (5) years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in non-profit financial management.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Strong analytical skills in non-profit accounting, financial analysis, and reporting.
  • Proficiency in financial reporting systems and accounting software.
  • Strong leadership capabilities, including team development, cross-functional collaboration, and experience in complex organizational settings.
